Super Mario’s Wine
Right from one of the world’s wine capitals Italy, this wine is made by winemaker Mario Ercolino and is hugely popular first in Italy and second in Europe. Its popularity in Italy stems from the fact that the growth of its grapes is a very meticulous process that is carried out carefully. The grapes are actually grown on the rocky coast of Sicily and this gives the resulting wine a taste that most wines do not carry. Saserello 2010 has its roots in the rocks of Sicily and this is why the wine’s name comes from ‘sassi’ which actually means ‘stones’. Unlike other wines that have a well laid out recipe and procedure, this wine has no exact recipe. All Mario the winemaker does is keep tasting it over and over until it has attained a perfect taste. After spending so much time in the tasting and re-tasting, it comes as no surprise that the wine was able to take home gold at Berliner Wein 2012.
One may be wondering why the wine is referred to as ‘super’ but this is simply because of the blend of syrah, cabernet, Sangiovese and Merlot to come up with a very ‘super’ result. The place where the fruits are grown is very well endowed with minerals and the soils are very rich and healthy. This, coupled with the well received sunshine and very perfect sea breeze, gives rise to fruits that are packed with concentrated tastes and rich flavors.
A fruit that has been sun baked tends to create a very rich flavor and a rather unique taste. It also tends to have hints of spice and great color. All these are attributes that have propelled Saserello 2010 to the position of a critically acclaimed wine. The wine can comfortably be enjoyed with dishes that range from meaty dishes to vegetarian dishes.
